Description

Tofu Waffles are a savory and fun way to enjoy tofu! Slice the tofu into slabs, cover them in the breading and put them in your waffle iron.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 Block Extra Firm or Firm Tofu (we find extra firm works best), drained
  • 0.25 cup Corn starch or Arrowroot Powder
  • 0.25 cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Salt, or to Taste
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Black Pepper
  • Oil Spray for Waffle Iron, Optional

Instructions

  • Preheat your Waffle Iron: Turn on your waffle iron. If your iron has temperature controls, set it to 400 F (205 C). Let it fully heat before adding any of the tofu slabs.
  • Cut the Tofu: Grab a cutting board and knife. Open your tofu packaging and drain out any excess water. Place the tofu on it's side on the cutting board and cut it into 3 to 4 slabs.
  • Prepare the Breading: In a large shallow bowl, add the starch, nutritional yeast, and spices. Mix the dry ingredients together with a whisk.
  • Bread the Tofu: Take each slab and gently coat each side of the tofu. Gently shake off the extra.
  • Add to the Waffle Iron: Oil spray the plates beforehand if you have a nonstick waffle iron/plates. Add the slabs to the waffle iron and close the the plates together. For a better cook, add some heavy metal cookware, such as a pot or skillet, to the top of waffle iron to force it down. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes before checking on them.
  • Remove and Serve: Using a spatula, remove the tofu waffles. They should come off clean if cooked fully. Add them to a plate and add any sauces you'd like for flavoring. Enjoy!
  • Storage and Reheating: Store tofu waffles in an airtight container for up to 4 or 5 days. I recommend reheating in an air fryer, toaster, oven, or the oven, but a nonstick skillet with a little pan spray should work too!

Notes

  • Note 1: If you have a round waffle maker, you can cut the slabs to fix the shape of your particular waffle maker. If you have a large enough round waffle iron, you may not even need to cut the slabs at all.
  • Note 2: If you'd prefer, you can make tofu waffles with out the breading. It will be less crispy and much more plain, so be ready with another way to flavor them.
  • Note 3: Don't forget a dipping sauce! We used our Vegan Chipotle Sauce to dunk our tofu waffles into. Ketchup, green onions, soy sauce, diluted miso paste, and hot sauce are also good.
