Tofu Waffles are a super savory and fun way to enjoy tofu! Just slice the tofu into slabs, cover them in the breading and then put them in your hot waffle iron. They'll crisp up so nice! It's a great recipe for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Hey Internet, we've got a new way of cooking tofu for you today: tofu waffles! We love this tofu waffle recipe for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner and it's great for meal prep too in case you find yourself with a busy morning or too.

A block of tofu can do so many things! It can be used to make sauces and dips, like with our Tofu Mayo and our Spicy Harissa Whipped Tofu Dip. It can be cheese, like in our Vegan Brie or 5 minute Vegan Mozzarella. It can take the place of eggs, like in our Tofu Scramble. It even takes the place of protein mains, like our Panko Tofu and our Vegan Cordon Bleu. Check out our big list of the Best Tofu Recipes for more ideas.

All of these recipes make use of a variety of cooking methods. Instant pot, air fryer, skillets, steamer pot, baking dishes, an so much more. But we were in the middle of testing a Protein Waffle Recipe (coming soon!), and thought to ourselves "what would happen if we stuck some tofu in there?" After a few tries, we were to get some golden brown morsels to pop out of our waffle plates.

Our waffle tofu uses a mix similar to our Crispy Tofu. As such, this recipe turns out like savory waffles; kind of like if chicken and waffles had a baby. The good news is you'll have a high-protein breakfast recipe, but if you're looking for a more traditional waffle batter recipe, you'll need another recipe. We do have these Gluten Free Waffles that are great with maple syrup and might float your boat if you want sweeter waffles.

Let's get into this recipe!

Why You'll Love This Tofu Recipe

  • High Protein Recipe: With an entire package of tofu, there easily 40 grams of protein to be had! Eat as many waffled tofu slices as you'd like.
  • Super Easy: There's only 5 minutes of prep work to be done. Everything else is just waiting for them to cook. This is one of those genius recipes that's unique, easy, and makes meal prep a bit more fun!
  • Savory and Crispy: With an crispy outside filled with spices, you'll want this over and over again! Serve with sticky rice, a veggie stir fry, or anything you like!

Ingredients

Pick up these simple ingredients the next time you're at your local grocery store. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, instructions, and accurate nutrition information (to the best of my ability; please consult your physician or healthcare professional if you have specific dietary needs or need to meet a certain daily value of any nutrient).

  • 1 Block Firm or Extra-Firm Tofu: While either can be used, we found that extra firm tofu had a better time holding its shape when cut into slabs. This makes it easier to get 4 slabs out of one block of tofu. Silken tofu will fall apart, so it's not best for this recipe unless you're actually blending it into a waffle mix as to use instead of egg or yogurt (this actually works, though, if you're veganizing a non-vegan recipe!
  • 0.25 Cup Corn Starch or Arrowroot Powder
  • 0.25 Cup Nutritional Yeast
  • 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Salt, or to Taste
  • 0.5 Teaspoon Black Pepper
  • Oil Spray for Waffle Iron, Optional: If you have a nonstick waffle iron, you can easily skip the oil, but you'll want to cook it just a bit longer. You could also use a silicone basting brush to brush avocado oil or whatever oil you like onto the hot waffle iron, but use caution (you can use paper towels too but we've burned ourselves this way so we don't recommend it).

How to Make Waffle Iron Tofu

  1. Preheat your Waffle Iron: Turn on your waffle iron. If your iron has temperature controls, set it to 400 F (205 C). Let it fully heat before adding any of the tofu slabs.
  2. Cut the Tofu: Grab a cutting board and knife. Open your tofu packaging and drain out any excess water. Place the tofu on it's side on the cutting board and cut it into 3 to 4 slabs.
  3. Prepare the Breading: In a shallow but large bowl, add the starch, nutritional yeast, and spices. Mix the dry ingredients together with a whisk.
  4. Bread the Tofu: Take each slab and gently coat each side of the tofu. Gently shake off the extra.
  5. Add to the Waffle Iron: Oil spray the plates beforehand if you have a nonstick waffle iron/plates. Add the slabs to the waffle iron and close the the plates together. For a better cook, add some heavy metal cookware, such as a pot or skillet, to the top of waffle iron to force it down. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes before checking on them.
  6. Remove and Serve: Using a spatula, remove the tofu waffles. They should come off clean if cooked fully. Add them to a plate and add any sauces you'd like for flavoring. Enjoy!
  7. Storage and Reheating: Store tofu waffles in an airtight container for up to 4 or 5 days. I recommend reheating in an air fryer, toaster, oven, or the oven, but a nonstick skillet with a little pan spray should work too!

Frequently Asked Questions

What sort and size of waffle iron did you use?

You probably want to go with at least a medium sized waffle iron. We used a combination panini press and waffle iron called the Cusinart griddler. It has rectangular waffle shapes in its plates (full disclosure we did have to purchase the waffle plates separately but they were inexpensive and it saves us from having to store yet another gadget), so it fit our tofu slaps perfectly.

I have a round waffle iron, how can I make this recipe?

Luckily, tofu is pretty malleable. You can cut the slabs to fix the shape of your particular waffle maker, such as a belgian waffle maker. If you have a large enough round waffle iron, you may not even need to cut the slabs at all.

What should I top my waffles with?

Savory toppings are a good way to go! We used our Vegan Chipotle Sauce to dunk our tofu waffles into. Ketchup, green onions, soy sauce, diluted miso paste, and hot sauce are also good.

Do I absolutely need the breading?

No, you can make tofu waffles with out the breading. It will be less crispy and much more plain, so be ready with another way to flavor them.
