Ingredients
Pick up these simple ingredients the next time you're at a grocery store. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, instructions, and accurate nutrition information (to the best of my ability; please consult your physician or healthcare professional if you have specific dietary needs or need to meet a certain daily value of any nutrient). I give substitutions for the ingredients in the section below this one, so most people can still make this recipe!
- 1 15 oz (425 g) Canned Butter Beans, with About a ½ Cup of Bean Liquid Reserved: When you strain the liquid out of the beans, place a measuring cup underneath it to catch the liquid. Add a little at a time to the blender to get the hummus consistency you desire! This is a great trick for any hummus recipe; the starch in the liquid helps to make the recipe more creamy than just water.
- 2-3 Tablespoons Tahini: A delicious thick paste made from ground sesame seeds.
- 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice is great for this recipe! If you never have it on hand, we love the Italian Volcano Bottled Lemon Juice as well.
- 1 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1 Teaspoon Onion Powder
- 0.25 Teaspoon Salt: Sea salt or iodized salt are both fine.
Additionally, you can add these for some fun toppings!
- A Drizzle of Olive Oil
- A Sprinkle of Paprika
- Some Fresh Chopped Parsley
Substitutions
- Butter Beans: While it wouldn't be a butter bean hummus anymore, there are similar beans you can use! Cannellini beans and garbanzo beans are great in a pinch.
- Tahini: The tahini adds a great nutty flavor, so to replace it you can use a couple tablespoons of soaked raw cashews or even pine nuts! Soaked raw sunflower seeds also work well.
- Lemon Juice: White wine vinegar can be used to get acid into the dish if you have no lemon juice.
- Salt: Miso paste is a great lower sodium replacement for salt with a boost of umami flavor.
- Garlic Powder: Use a couple whole garlic cloves instead if you like some spice! Alternatively, add some fresh cracked black pepper.
- Other seasonings: Put your own twist on this simple recipe! Try any of these unique flavoring ideas: white pepper, red pepper flakes, sweet paprika or smoked paprika, ground cumin,
How to Make This Butter Bean Hummus Recipe
- Reserve Your Bean Liquid: When you open your can of butter beans, strain them so the liquid ends up in a measuring cup or bowl. (We used canned beans to save time. If you cooked your butter beans on the stove top or in the instant pot, remember to reserve about a cup of the cooking liquid).
- Add Everything to a Blender: Add your ingredients to your blender or food processor and blender them until smooth. You can adjust the texture of the butter bean dip with the extra reserved liquid.
- Serve: With a blender spatula or any implement you prefer, add the contents of the blender into an airtight container or a plate. Add any toppings when you are ready to serve. Drizzle on a splash of extra virgin olive oil and a sprinkle of parsley to keep it simple, or try a little paprika.
Frequently Asked Questions
Don't panic! A few tablespoons of ice cold water can be used in its place. Consider adding a pinch of salt more to offset the lack of saltiness in the water.
Unless you really like the taste of raw garlic, you'll want to cook it. Roasted garlic would be perfect for this recipe! Cut the top of your garlic head off, add some oil, wrap it in aluminum foil and then bake it at 400 degrees F (or 205 degrees C) for about 30 minutes. Squeeze it to remove the skin and add it to your blender.
Pita bread, tortilla chips, and vegetables are all great places to start. We like to make plates full of cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and strips of red bell pepper to dip in to our hummus recipes.
