Matcha Overnight Oats will be your new favorite way to wake up each morning! These oats only take about 5 minutes or less of work to make. Just pop them in the fridge the night before and in the morning you'll have a sweet and fresh treat that will wake you up. A must try if you're a matcha lover!

Hey Internet, we've got another delicious breakfast recipe for you today. Overnight oats have become one of our favorite ways to quickly prep our breakfasts. With how little time they take to make, it's hard not to be a huge fan of overnight oats.

We recently developed some Coffee Overnight Oats, which we've been making a lot recently. But it's about time we switched up what flavor our cold oats were. And we're big fans of matcha!

We've made a lot of vegan matcha recipes over the years. Our Vegan Matcha Pound Cake is one of our most popular recipes on our blog! We have other baked goods like our Vegan Matcha Cookies and our Matcha Mug Cake. We also have this Vegan Matcha Latte and Matcha Milkshakes that we have for our drinks.

With vegan white chocolate and fresh berries, this matcha oatmeal recipe comes together to be sweet, chocolatey, and earthy. So grab your favorite fruit toppings and let's get these oats in the fridge.

Why You'll Love These Matcha Overnight Oats

  • Tea that Packs a Punch: Matcha powder, especially ceremonial grade matcha, is super nice to wake up with.
  • Easy Meal Prep: With simple ingredients that you just mix together, this recipe only takes about 5 minutes of actual work to make.
  • Customizable: Bring out your favorite toppings, because it's easy to add flavors to this recipe.

Ingredients

Pick up these simple ingredients the next time you're at a grocery store. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, instructions, and accurate nutritional information (to the best of my ability; please consult your physician or healthcare professional if you have specific dietary needs). I give substitutions for the ingredients in the section below this one, so most people can still make this recipe!

  • ½ Cup Rolled Oats: We really love the One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats because they are more satisfying than regular old fashioned oats. AND they're glyphosate-free, organic, non-GMO and certified gluten-free!
  • ¾ Cup Unsweetened Soy Milk
  • 1 to 1.5 Teaspoon Matcha Powder : We like to use ceremonial grade matcha when we're trying to be fancy. It is a much more bright green type of matcha (green tea powder) that looks great in recipes. But it can be quite expensive. This brand, while a bit more yellowish green, is much easier on the bank and while still having that great matcha flavor! If you don't love the taste of matcha, make sure you use a high quality one, and use a little less than the recipe calls for. Or add more sweetener!
  • 1 Tablespoon White Chia Seeds
  • 2 Tablespoons Agave
  • 3 Tablespoon Vegan White Chocolate Chips
  • ¼ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Substitutions

  • Soy Milk: Oat milk, unsweetened almond milk, and even coconut milk are great options for non-dairy milk.
  • Agave: Pure maple syrup or date syrup will work well with this recipe. You could also try our vegan honey or your favorite zero calorie sweetener.
  • White Chocolate Chips: Darker chocolate should work well with this recipe too. These semi-sweet vegan chocolate chips are a great choice.

How to Make Matcha Overnight Oats

  1. Grab Your Jar: You want the right jar for the right job. We used 16-ounce jar with a sealable lid. Any bigger or smaller and you'll have to adjust the recipe.
  2. Heat the Milk: Place your milk in a microwave safe measuring cup. Heat it for 20 to 30 seconds. It should be hot but not boiling.
  3. Mix the Matcha: Pour the hot milk in to the jar. Add the matcha and stir in. You may want to use an electric frother to make things easier (or use a blender!). (Alternatively, if you're familiar with using a matcha whisk and bowl, sift in your matcha, add a tablespoon or two of the warm milk and whisk the matcha that way.)
  4. Add Everything Else: Add the liquid ingredients, mix, then the dry ingredients, and mix again. Taste the liquids as now is the best time to adjust the sweetness level. Be sure to reserve a tablespoon of white chocolate chips if you want it as a topping too.
  5. Refrigerate: Seal the jar and add it to your fridge. Let chill and absorb for at least 6 hours or until morning.
  6. Serve: Add any fruit toppings, such as blueberries or raspberries and enjoy your matcha oats!

Storage Instructions

Since your matcha overnight oats are already in a sealable jar, you can just keep them in there to store them. They should last about 3 to 5 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Else Can I Add For Toppings?

Berries are always a great choice. We did blueberries, but also strawberries and raspberries great. Slivered almonds or walnuts are another great addition. Vegan Greek yogurt or our homemade soy yogurt or a little bit of peanut butter, almond butter or cashew butter are great for some healthy fats. A little bit of toasted coconut and more vegan white chocolate chips or regular dairy-free chocolate chips are also great!

Why Shouldn't I Use Quick Oats?

They'll get way too mushy if you leave them overnight. For the best results, use rolled oats for this overnight oats recipe.

Can I Use Steel Cut Oats?

No. Steel cut oats are too thick and will not get soft enough. You could try par cooking them.

What Jar Do You Recommend Using?

We used these jars here. They're really nice to carry on the go! But any mason jar should work.

Can I use regular green tea leaves instead of a jar of matcha?

No, they will not dissolve and sencha leaves are not the same as matcha. While you could brew green tea, strain it, and use it in this recipe, it would not be the same. Also, it would be far too much water and in my opinion you still need to be able to use the soy milk to get creamy overnight oats.
