Tahini Milkshake

This Tahini Milkshake is a chilly yet cozy drink! Nutty tahini is a rich, peanut-butter-like spread that is made from sesame seeds. With some frozen banana and a pinch of cinnamon, you'll have a comforting yet easy dessert or snack with this tahini shake recipe!

Hey Internet, we've got another great milkshake recipe for you. We've made Coconut Milkshakes and Matcha Milkshakes. We even make Strawberry Milk that's easy to make into a milkshake, but that's a bit of a strech.

This time for our vegan milkshakes, we went with the unique nutty flavor of tahini as the creamy base. Unlike nut butters, tahini is made from ground sesame seeds. It's earthy but much more neutral in flavor. That means tahini flavor can go either sweet or savory in any recipe.

For savory, we have these amazing Saucy Tahini Noodles and our Lemon Tahini Broccolini Pasta. For a sweet and savory application, we have this Vegan Strawberry Tahini Dressing. We've made other great sauces too, like our Lemon Miso Tahini and our Maple Mustard Tahini. We also make these delicious chocolate tahini brownies. We'll be getting those on the site soon-ish!

With this recipe, you can have it as a breakfast shake, a dessert or something to pair with a vegan burger and French fries. It tastes so good and every part of the recipe is an easy part. You'll have your shake in just 5 minutes!

Anyway, let's grab a good blender and make this vegan milkshake!

Why You'll Love These Tahini Milkshakes

  • Super Fast: It will only take you 5 minutes to make this delicious drink.
  • Rich and Creamy: Tahini makes everything a decadent treat! This is great because we are balancing it with the natural sweetness of a banana shake.
  • Customizable: With a lot of great flavor combinations, there's so much else you can add to take this dairy-free milkshake recipe to the next level.

Ingredients

Pick up these simple ingredients the next time you're at a grocery store. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, instructions, and accurate nutritional information (to the best of my ability; please consult your physician or healthcare professional if you have specific dietary needs). I give substitutions for the ingredients in the section below this one, so most people can still make this recipe!

  • 1.5 Cups Unsweetened Soy Milk
  • 3 Tablespoons Tahini: Soom Foods has this magic tahini that's smooth and flavorful that we use for our tahini recipes. But any tahini you enjoy should work.
  • 3-4 Medjool Dates, Pitted
  • ½-3/4 Cup Frozen Banana
  • ½ Teaspoon Ceylon Cinnamon

Substitutions

  • Tahini: While it wouldn't be a tahini milkshake anymore, you could get something similar with a little peanut butter or sunflower butter.
  • Soy Milk: Unsweetened almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk can all be great alternatives for the soy milk.
  • Dates: Maple syrup or agave are a good way to add some sweetness if you don't have dates. You could also experiment with a flavored syrup.
  • Bananas: You could use fresh bananas instead, however you'll need to get your milkshake cold in another way. You'll have to use ice cubes and adjust the recipe accordingly, adding a little bit more tahini. Or use vegan ice cream or for your tehina milkshake.

How to Make Tahini Milkshakes

  1. Note: If your dates are hard or dry OR you don't have a high-powered blender, you may want to soak the dates in very hot water for about an hour and then drain them before making the recipe. OR use a liquid sweetener like agave, date syrup, or maple syrup. This is to ensure you get a smooth tahini milkshake.
  2. Add the Dates and Milk: Pit the dates and add the date flesh to a blender and then add your soy milk. Blend together for about 30 seconds.
  3. Add the Remaining Ingredients: Place the frozen bananas, tahini, and cinnamon in the blender and blend everything for 15 to 30 seconds.
  4. Serve: Pour your tahini milkshake into a glass and add any toppings you want.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Can I Top This Tahini Shake With?

We've tried this vegan milkshake recipe with some cacao nibs and they were so good. You could also chop up some chocolate chips and sprinkle them on top too. You could also add some coconut whip or aquafaba whipped cream. Mini dairy-free chocolate chips or chocolate shavings also work well.

What Customizations can I Make?

Vanilla extract can add a new layer of depth to your shakes. You could also add some cacao powder or some chocolate syrup as chocolate pairs with tahini in a great way! Try replacing some of the plant-based milk with cold brew for a unique flavor (and caffeine boost)!

Can I Use Fresh Banana or Shelf Stable Milk?

You can but if they are not cold, your milkshake will not be cold after blending. This is not a problem! Cover you milkshake and then stick it in your freezer for about 5-15 minutes. This will give you those chilly vegan treats you want!

My Blender Wasn't Powerful Enough to Break Apart the Dates. Anything I Can Do To Save my Shake?

Get a fine-mesh sieve over your glass and pour milkshake through it. That should give you a nice and smooth shake.

  • 3-4 Medjool Dates, Pitted (or use a liquid sweetener like agave)
  • ½-¾ cup Frozen Banana
  • ½ Teaspoon Ceylon Cinnamon (see note 3)

Instructions

Notes

  • Note 1: For toppings, consider cacao nibs, chopped chocolate chips, or vegan whipped cream.
  • Note 2: For additional flavors, try vanilla extract or chocolate.
  • Note 3: We prefer Ceylon cinnamon as it tastes so much better than any other cinnamon we've tried. It's pretty much the secret ingredient that's not a secret. It just adds a really nice flavor!
