Hey Internet, we've got a delicious treat for you this fall. With some bananas or some vegan ice cream, you'll have an easy pumpkin shake that everyone can enjoy! These easy pumpkin milkshakes use simple ingredients are not hard to find. If you want a slice of pie in a glass, you've come to the right recipe!
This recipe, we decide to try making it two different ways. The first way is using some vegan ice cream as the base. It's rich and decedent with that creamy ice cream. The other way make use of frozen bananas, which you can freeze yourself using spotty bananas. We love using frozen bananas to make protein shakes, and they work well making milkshakes too!
We made this just last night but we've also been making it almost every night for two weeks because it's just so good! It's one of our favorite easy new recipes for fall, such as our Carrot and Sweet Potato Soup.
If you need even more simple milkshake recipes, we've got plenty. For a caffeine boost, our Easy Coffee Milkshake is a great way to wake up. These Matcha Milkshakes are also another sweet way to get perked up. For less caffeinated recipes, we have these Coconut Milkshakes and Tahini Milkshakes that are creamy with a ton of extra flavor! And they all are super easy recipes.
We've also got a few protein shake recipes if that's more your deal, such as our Pumpkin Protein Shake, Apple Protein Shake, and Protein Coffee Shake!
Anyway, back to pumpkin season. Because this time of year, we need all things pumpkin and this recipe tastes like leftover pumpkin pie. So good!
Why You'll Love This Pumpkin Spice Milkshake
- Easy to Make: Blending only takes about 30 to 60 seconds. You'll probably spend more time gathering ingredients!
- 6 Ingredients: And you might not even need that many, depending on how sweet you'd like your shakes. We use creamy vanilla ice cream (dairy free of course) but we also have a healthier banana option! It's even possible to make this recipe with zero added sugar if you swap the optional sweetener for a few pitted Medjool dates.
- Warm Flavors: The flavors of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and more are great in a pumpkin milkshake! This is definitely a great sweet treat this pumpkin spice season.
Ingredients
Pick up these simple ingredients for your milkshakes the next time you're at a grocery store. See the recipe card at the bottom of this post for full ingredients, instructions, and accurate nutrition information (to the best of my ability; please consult your physician or healthcare professional if you have specific dietary needs or need to meet a certain daily value of any nutrient).
We have two version of this recipe, labeled below!
Ice Cream Verison
- 2 Cups Plant-Based Vanilla Ice Cream: We found that the Breyer's vegan ice cream (not sponsored) worked great for this recipe. You get a lot for the price, so you can make more milkshakes later or just eat it out of the tub. Other ice cream flavors will probably be fine, but we wanted pumpkin to be the star ingredient here so we stuck with classic vanilla.
- 1 Cup Unsweetened Almond Milk:
- ¾ Cup Pumpkin Puree (Please note that pumpkin pie filling will work but it has other ingredients so you might need to modify the recipe slightly, such as using less sweetener if your filling is sweetened or foregoing the pumpkin pie spice.)
- 2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup, or To Taste, Optional: You may find your ice cream to be sweet enough. Use your judgment and add a little syrup at a time.
- ¼ Teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice: You can leave out these warm spices if you like but we really love the addition of them. It seems like some people go really heavy handed on their pumpkin pie spice, but we find it can get kind of bitter quickly so we just stick to a small amount to start with.
- ½ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- Vegan Whipped Cream, Optional, for topping
- 1 Sheet of Graham Cracker, Crumbled, for topping
Frozen Banana Version
- 1 Medium to Large Frozen Banana
- 1-2 Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk, to taste (depends on how thick you like your shake!)
- ¾ Cup Pumpkin Puree
- 1-2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup, or To Taste, Optional: Again, a lot of factors go into this. The ripeness of the banana when you froze it will affect it's sweetness. Use your judgment and add a little syrup at a time.
- ¼ Teaspoon Pumpkin Pie Spice
- ¾ Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Substitutions
- Pumpkin Puree: In a pinch you can use pumpkin pie filling. Note that it is usually sweetened with sugar so it can immediately go into a pie crust. You will need to adjust the sugar levels accordingly, perhaps forgoing the maple syrup all together.
- Pumpkin Pie Spice: You can make your own pumpkin pie spice if you have the base spices at home. Cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg make up the bulk of most spice mixes, with some allspice and cloves for good measure.
- Almond Milk: Most other plant milks, like oat milk, will work with this recipe. The only one you need to be careful with is coconut milk, as even the low fat versions are super rich. Use it cautiously.
- Maple Syrup: Agave works incredible well as a maple syrup replacement. You can also use granulated sugar (it blended up fine when we tested it, but keep in mind that we have a high speed blender and we aren't sure how a traditional blender would do with the coarse texture of granulated sugar).
How to Make This Pumpkin Milkshake Recipe
- Add the Ingredients to a blender.
- Blend for about 30 to 60 seconds or until smooth
- Serve: Pour into a glass and add toppings!
Frequently Asked Questions
In addition to the graham cracker crumbs and vegan whipped cream, you could add chocolate chips, or some speculoos cookies. Some chocolate sauce would be also great!
We peel and then slice our bananas into rounds. Then we place them in a freezer safe bag. For even better results, you can freeze them on tray in a single layer and then store them. It helps keep them from sticking together.
Sure thing!
In a shaker bottle with ice cream, maybe. Though you would be shaking for a while. Otherwise, no.
